Why this name
Luísa Mahin kept the word moving.
Luísa Mahin was an African woman from the Costa da Mina who lived in Salvador in the early 19th century. Free, she worked as a street vendor. She was arrested more than once on suspicion of plotting uprisings against slavery, in the Bahia of the Malê Revolt (1835) and the Sabinada (1837).
Her son, Luís Gama, was sold into slavery by his own father at age 10. He learned to read at 17, won his freedom and became a lawyer without a degree: with words and the law, he freed hundreds of people. Much of what we know about her comes from what he wrote.
That's why the scholarship carries her name. Here, learning a language is the same gesture: words as a tool to open doors. Every scholar studies with the whole Gold plan — and carries that name along.
In 2019, Luísa Mahin was entered into Brazil's Book of the Heroes and Heroines of the Homeland (Law 13.816). Historians still debate details of her life; here we tell only what holds up.
